WHAT’S THE RIGHT NUMBER OF BEDROOMS FOR YOUR NEW HOME?

When designing a new home, you'll need to consider the ideal number of bedrooms. You should have enough to accommodate household members and guests without going over your budget. Here's what to consider before discussing the plans with a home builder.

1. Current Needs

Begin the decision-making process by looking at your needs now. What's the size of your current household? If you're a family of three with a young child, consider having three bedrooms, one for you, another for your child, and the third for guests. As a rule, add one more for every additional family member to give them privacy.

2. Future Plans

If you have plans to expand your household from only two to a family of four, tell your home builder to include at least four bedrooms in your house’s floor plans. Doing so allows your two children to have their own rooms as they grow up.

Additionally, consider if a parent or other family member may need to move in because they’re sick or in need of company. An extra bedroom comes in handy for such situations.

3. Flex Space

Sometimes, estimating the number of bedrooms for your current and future needs requires a little leeway. Including a flex space is becoming more common in many newly constructed homes. Since it’s a room without a fixed purpose, you can use it however you want until you need another bedroom.
